Pom Pom Whisk

INDOOR

0 – 30 months

Where there’s a whisk there’s a wayThis simple activity introduces children to ‘problem solving’ and will strengthen hand muscles through repeated pincer and palmer grasp.

Materials

  • Assorted colour pom poms
  • Wire or plastic kitchen whisk

Other optional materials

  • Pipe cleaners
  • Straws
  • Sponges
  • Tissues

    Set up the environment

    1. Insert pom poms or other small plush materials inside the whisk; allow your child to retrieve the pom poms using their fingers.
    2. Observe as they learn to steady the whisk with one hand while pulling the pom poms out with the other.
    3. Optional: Separate the pom poms into piles by colour, or practice counting as each pom pom is removed.

    Increase the fun

    1. Cut a piece of string or yarn approx. 24”.
    2. Tie one end to the whisk handle.
    3. Loosely thread the opposite end through the spokes of the whisk in multiple directions.
    4. Unwind the string until it is completely unravelled.

At Learning Jungle, we believe all children are capable, confident and full of potential. Co-learning empowers your child to take initiative. Encouraging child participation and engaging in open-ended, thought-provoking conversation throughout play is important for healthy child development.

    Conversations with your child

    • What do you think a whisk is used for?
    • Use your fingers to remove the pom poms
    • Can you remove all the orange pom poms?
    • Let’s count how many we’ve removed
    • Now try putting them all back inside the whisk
