Rice & Gems Sensory

18–30 months

A heart-filled sensory experience. This engaging indoor activity develops your child’s fine motor skills and stimulates multiple senses at one time. Sensory bins allow your children to explore and learn through play.

  • A large bin
  • 3 to 4 cups of rice
  • Measuring scoops or spoons
  • Small cups and containers
  • Plastic heart gems (or substitute with other loose parts)

Set up the environment

  1. Pour the rice in the bin.
  2. Place all the scoops and small containers in the bin.
  3. Scatter the gems or loose parts on the rice.
Let your child explore the different textures in the bin. Encourage them to explore the rice and gems using different scoops and containers.

Instead of rice you can add cornstarch and water for a different texture and sensory experience.

At Learning Jungle, we believe all children are capable, confident and full of potential. Co-learning empowers your child to take initiative. Encouraging child participation and engaging in open-ended, thought-provoking conversation throughout play is important for healthy child development.

Conversations with your child

  • What does it feel like?
  • What color and shape are the gems?
  • Can you pour the rice inside the bowls?
  • Can you fill the bowls all the way to the top?
  • Let’s count the gems.
